YMCA Thunder Basketball. From James Naismith’s invention of basketball at the Y in 1891 to today, the Y has a rich tradition in sports played around the globe. We nurture the potential of youth through sports programming by strengthening character, engaging families and building lasting relationships. We are pleased to partner with the Oklahoma City Thunder to further our mission within our youth basketball league, now called the YMCA Thunder Basketball League.

YOUTH BASKETBALL. YMCA utilizes volunteer coaches to focus on participation and fun! While basic skills of the game are developed through practices and games, every child learns sportsmanship and values necessary to be successful in life. Every game begins with a Youth Sports Pledge and ends with a handshake. The YMCA Youth Sports Program helps kids become not only become better players, but better people as well.
3v3 Soccer and Basketball Important Dates Games begin: Week of Nov. 15 Last Game: Week of Dec. 20 • There will be multiple games played per night • Age divisions may be combined due to low participation and with other YMCAs for games. • Games Only • No program week of Nov. 22. Y-Ball is an opportunity for boys and girls of all abilities and backgrounds to play recreational basketball in a safe, fun, and nurturing environment. Every player plays equally in Y-Basketball regardless of their position or individual ability. Teammate and coach requests now accepted!
At the YMCA of Greensboro, the health and safety of our program participants, members and staff is our top priority. We will implement COVID-19 transmission prevention protocols based on guidelines from national, state and local health officials, including those from the NCDHHS, the CDC and local health departments.
Dr. James Naismith was given the challenge of creating a game that could be played indoors during the cold winter months. Hanging simple peach baskets and using a soccer ball, Naismith created the game of basketball and wrote the first 13 rules of the game. Youth Basketball Leagues. From building stronger skills to gaining self-confidence, basketball at the Y is about more than just the game, it is about building the whole child, from the inside out.
Our Youth Basketball leagues at the Y are held during the summer and winter. YMCA league games are played at the A.J. McClung and D.A. Turner YMCAs. For our Smith Station league, it is held only during the winter. League games for Smith Station are played at Smith Station High School. Practices are generally held on weekday evenings with games held on Fridays and/or Saturdays.
The Y’s youth basketball league heavily emphasizes teamwork and sportsmanship, while teaching kids the basics of the game: shooting, dribbling, rebounding, passing and defense.
